Project Overview
Jane, a professional artist with years of experience handling high-value art installations, came to Made Evident with an idea and a napkin sketch. She’d identified a real gap: hanging artwork is one of the most stressful, trust-based moments in owning and displaying art. Hooks, wire, and adhesive all ask the installer to trust the fixing, none of them confirm it.
Jane wanted a system that removed that doubt: something that would securely mount artwork, allow adjustment after fixing, and reassure the installer at the exact moment they let go, all while matching the quality perception of the art it was holding. It needed to feel premium and precise, and it needed to be a plastic part that could actually be tooled and produced at a viable cost.
The result is a concealed two-part mounting system. First a pair of corner brackets fixed to the artwork frame, secondly, wall buttons fixed to the wall. The system clips into eachother with a tactile, audible click confirming correct installation, and that can be levelled or adjusted afterward without removal. The finished product was independently tested by SGS for pull-out, shear, and tamper resistance, load-tested to 35kg, and is designed and made in New Zealand.
Made Evident led the entire hardware side of the project over a two-year development from initial concept through to tooling and DVT testing.
My Role
Early on, that meant fast, rough exploration to work out how the mechanism should behave before committing to a direction. As a startup bringing a genuinely novel first product to market, We kept the approach deliberately calculated and cost-conscious, weighing every design decision against tooling and production cost as well as performance.
Once we understood how the product needed to function a core design-for-manufacture challenge came into play, ensuring we can achieve this with a simple open and shut injection mould tool. wallCLIXX needed undercuts in several places. Instead of defaulting to expensive sliders, We used carefully placed shutoffs, keeping the tool simpler and cheaper without compromising the mechanism.
The haptic feel was another area couldn’t compromise on. The click confirming engagement had to sit in a narrow window and carefully be controlled when tooling commenced. Too soft and the user isn’t reassured it’s fitted, too firm and removal risks damaging the artwork or wall. The haptic feel of folding over the centrepoint locator tab needed the same tuning. We adopted a clear metal-safe tooling approach and worked closely with local manufacturers to keep tight control over tolerances until it felt right.
Aesthetics mattered just as much, Jane wanted the product to look as good as it functioned. Several material options were explored before committing to tooling, selecting a glass-filled nylon blend for its strength, dimensional stability, and clean, crisp finish, with enough flexibility to support cleaner colour options.
