Turn your product idea into a clear development path

You know what you want to create, but not necessarily how to get there.

  • Clarify what the product needs to do
  • Identify the key unknowns
  • Define a sensible first step
  • Likely materials and processes
  • Suitable production methods
  • Manufacturing considerations to resolve
  • Indicative development investment
  • Prototype and tooling allowances
  • Major product cost drivers
  • Technical uncertainties
  • Development risks
  • Specialist input or testing required

Through focused research, industrial design assessment and indicative costing, we identify the likely development path, technical considerations, key unknowns and the people or processes that may be required.

You leave with a clearer understanding of what happens next before committing heavily to design, engineering, prototyping or tooling.

What you will walk away with

How it works

Step 01 //

Tell us about your product

Start with a structured questionnaire covering what you’re trying to create, who it’s for, what you already know, and any sketches, references, CAD or research you have. This gives us the context needed to understand the brief, constraints and key unknowns before scoping begins.

Step 02 //

We research and scope it

We review the relevant product landscape, assess the likely development and manufacturing path, identify key technical considerations and unknowns, and build an indicative roadmap, budget and cost model.

Step 03 //

Review create a plan

We have a 1:1 session to walk you through the scope, explain the assumptions and risks, and discuss out understanding of the most sensible next steps. Whether that means progressing into development, resolving specific unknowns first, or revisiting part of the brief.

FAQ’s

How developed does my idea need to be?

You don’t need a finished design, CAD or prototype, but you should have already done some groundwork. You should have a reasonable understanding of the problem you’re solving, who the product is for, the existing competitive landscape and how you expect it might reach the market. Idea to Action is designed for ideas that are ready to be treated as real product-development projects, rather than very early “what if?” concepts.

How accurate are the cost estimates?

The costs are indicative planning estimates, not supplier quotations or fixed project prices. They are intended to help you understand the likely scale of investment, major cost drivers, and where further quoting or specialist input will be needed.

Does this include detailed product design?

No. Idea to Action is a scoping and planning service. It may include some early stage visuals to capture the vision and derive a conceptual understanding of the product, but this is only for scoping purposes. It does not include finished concept development, production CAD, engineering validation, prototypes, or supplier-ready documentation. Those can be undertaken separately once the development path is clearer.

What happens after the scope?

You’ll receive the completed scope and we’ll review the findings together. From there, you can decide whether to move into product development, resolve specific unknowns first, engage other specialists, or revisit parts of the brief before committing further.

Is my idea kept confidential?

Absolutely. I treat all client information with 100% professional confidentiality and can begin our engagement with an NDA.

What if you tell me my idea isn't viable?

My expertise is from a design and manufacturing point of view, I can provide validation when it comes to balancing market size with manufacturing and design cost. I also recommend talking with a business advisor for their input. While it may be a bitter pill to swallow, getting “don’t do it” feedback is one of the most valuable outcomes this session can provide. Finding out now that an idea has a major flaw before you invest too heavily. If that’s the case, we’ll spend the rest of our time brainstorming potential pivots or a new direction.

What kind of ideas do you specialize in?

I specialize in designing “hard” physical products. Think plastics, metals, electronics etc. I am an “industrial designer”, this means I work on the mechanical portions of a product and bring in specialists where needed. I commonly work with electrical and mechanical engineers to finalise products.

What if you can't help me?

I review your inital form and gauge if your idea is within my area of expertise and Made Evident is a good fit for you before any payment is required

By the end of the scope, you should have a clearer understanding of:

  • what needs to happen first
  • the likely development path
  • key technical risks and unknowns
  • who may need to be involved
  • indicative development investment
  • what should be resolved before progressing

To get started, tell me a little about what you’re looking to create and how far along the idea is. I’ll review the information, make sure Idea to Action is the right fit for your project, and let you know the best next step before any payment is required.
